Oracle is offering a data warehouse tailored for the needs of the financial services industry, the company announced Thursday.

Financial services have found the process of setting up generic data warehouses difficult to complete, the company asserts. The new data warehouse package should eliminate a lot of the routine chores devoted to customizing data warehouses for the financial environment, according to Oracle.

Enterprises will increasingly look for opportunities to tap self-service business intelligence systems and SaaS-based BI offerings in 2011, analysts say.

Other items that are also likely to be high on the enterprise agenda include technologies that enable businesses to do more real-time analysis of large data volumes, social media analytics and mobile BI.

A lot of these trends are already under way, but they will gain strength throughout 2011, said James Kobielus, an analyst at Forrester Research.

Now, employees eagerly tap and scroll through business data looking at daily sales pipelines, recent activity among key customers, and real-time revenue trends on their iPhones and iPads. "It definitely helps your credibility," says Beery at Life Technologies, a publicly traded biotech company based in southern California. "You want to know what we've done? Well, here it is."
 
IBM adds assessment tools to data center service offerings PDF

Using its research in analytics, IBM has created 18 assessment tools that it is incorporating into its IT services offerings.

The tools would allow IBM Global Technology Services to offer data center assessment services for that would cost less and take less time than competing offerings, said Steven Sams, IBM vice president of site and facilities services. They automate much of the manual labor of collecting IT inventories and building assessments, he said.
